When we start learning English, it’s important to understand our current level of knowledge and what to expect at each stage of learning. For this, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) divides language proficiency into six levels, from A1 to C2.
Level A1 (Beginner)
This is the most basic level of English proficiency. At A1, students can understand and use simple phrases and expressions for everyday communication. For example, they can talk about themselves, ask someone’s name, and ask basic questions about time and place. At this stage, it’s still challenging for students to engage in full conversations in English.
Level A2 (Elementary)
At the A2 level, students can express themselves slightly more using simple sentences. They can describe everyday situations, such as shopping, ordering food, or booking a hotel. Their comprehension improves, but complex texts and abstract conversations remain difficult.
Level B1 (Intermediate)
This level is considered a threshold for those who can use English more confidently in various areas of life. At B1, students can hold conversations on general topics, talk about their preferences, interests, and experiences. They can also handle straightforward tasks at work or school. However, they still lack the skills to discuss complex or specialized topics.
Level B2 (Upper-Intermediate)
At B2, your knowledge becomes more advanced. Students can communicate freely on a wide range of topics, express their opinions, and understand more complex texts. This level often serves as preparation for academic or professional environments requiring confident language use. At this stage, learners begin mastering more advanced grammatical structures.
Level C1 (Advanced)
At C1, you are nearly fluent in English. Students at this level can understand long texts, analyze them, and express opinions on complex issues. They can confidently engage in discussions on professional and academic topics and discuss sophisticated concepts such as politics, science, and art. Mistakes at this level are rare and usually don’t hinder understanding.
Level C2 (Proficiency)
C2 is the highest level of language proficiency, where a person speaks almost like a native speaker. Students at this level can easily comprehend any complex text, participate in high-level discussions, and adapt their language style depending on the context. They feel confident in all situations, whether it’s work, studies, or everyday communication.
